Paramedic Glossary

Prehospital Emergency Care is a technique of 3 years that prepares you to become a paramedic. If you are not familiar with this job, it is an emergency ambulatory system that brings people to the hospital when they are ill. During those 3 years we learn about every aspect of the job and how to properly care about patient. in this Glossary, we will give the definitions of terms related to this field of studies.

911
phone number
In the US and Canada) a phone number used to contact the emergency services.
Example: They called 911 because their witness a car accident.

A vehicle specially equipped for taking sick or injured people to and from the hospital, especially in emergencies.
Example: He patient was brought into hospital by ambulance six weeks ago, following a fall in the street.

anaphylactic shock

It is a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction.
Example: A patient went in anaphylactic shock after eating peanuts.

Example: The paramedic had to bag him because he stopped breathing.

The sudden loss of all heart activity due to an irregular heart rhythm.
Example: On her admission this time, Mrs was in a similar position and at risk of a cardiac arrest, and it was a sensitive issue that needed to be discussed with the family.

cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a lifesaving technique that's useful in many emergencies in which someone's breathing or heartbeat has stopped.
Example: Deputies began cardiopulmonary resuscitation and called 911.

cervical collar

A cervical collar, also known as a C-collar, neck brace, or neck support collar, is used to support and protect your neck. Decrease foraminal compression and inflammation of the nerve root by immobilization, reducing arm and neck pain.
Example: The paramedic put a cervical collar on a patient to stabilize his spine.

An apparatus used to control heart fibrillation by application of an electric current to the chest wall or heart.
Example: The implantable cardioverter defibrillator has become the standard therapy for protecting patients against sudden cardiac death.

Example: He told the dispatcher that his wife wasn't breathing.

Example: Cultivation of a plant used to make a popular local narcotic.

A person trained to give emergency medical care to people who are injured or ill, typically in a setting outside of a hospital.
Example: All ambulances were manned by a nurse or paramedic and a driver.

A system of rules that explain the correct conduct and procedures to be followed in formal situations.
Example: Protocol forbids the prince from making any public statement in his defense.

The regular movement of blood through your body that is caused by the beating of your heart and that can be felt by touching certain parts of your body.
Example: The doctor found a faint pulse.

A device for carrying a sick, injured, or dead person.
Example: Paramedics are putting all of their patients on a stretcher in the ambulance.

tachycardia
noun
Your heart is beating much faster than normal, usually more than 100 beats per minute.
Example: Tachycardia presents as the heart works harder to compensate for lost volume.

The preliminary assessment of patients or casualties in order to determine the urgency of their need for treatment and the nature of treatment required.
Example: It is a tool that is probably more useful in triage situations to establish priorities or health.
